Edible Gardens

Support of local edible gardens began in March of 2013, converting small plots of unused land into valuable sites of crop production. In a community like San Roque, edible gardens are a sustainable answer to economic and environmental issues. The gardens provide healthy and organic food for the farmer and his family. Once the gardens are producing crops, they provide food security for the community, helping feed families without using money necessary for school, healthcare, and other obligations. Further, the gardens offer financial opportunity if the farmers can produce more than they need for their family.  We provide farmers with seeds, soil, tools, structures, and technical advisory to provide their gardens with a healthy start. We are now re-designing the edible gardens' strategy as it started small and then we got over 30 women involved in the project, farming fifteen organic gardens in the local district, each of which produces all organic edible products. We hope to reach a goal of thirty gardens this 2016, and to continue support of the edible gardens working to reach self-sustainability.  The project is also currently in the process of establishing a farmers market in the area to provide local farmers access to greater urban markets. This year we will also focus in sustainable farming practices like rainwater harvesting and compost bins.
